In everyday life we use products made of various kind of materials. Anything we use in our daily life is made of some particular material, and there is a particular reason behind using that material. Let us take example of automobile, think about chasis,wheel,engine,body of automobile, every part of it is made of some particular material which satisfies desired characteristics of the component.Without deep study and researches of different materials it would not be possible to have light weight, efficient though reliable vehicles.
With the above example it can be understood that selection of material for manufacturing is a crucial subject. The role of mechanical engineer is to design and manufacture products. In the process of designing and manufacturing material selection plays a key role, which requires knowledge of structures and properties of different materials. so it is preliminary requirement for mechanical engineer to know about materials structure and properties
